Papers : of the Gooch family, 1812-1961 (bulk 1812- 1865).

The collection includes the political and business correspondence of Claiborne Watts Gooch as a planter in Henrico County, Va., and editor of the Richmond Enquirer, concerning in particular Henry Clay, Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler, and the second Bank of the United States. Also contains an account book, 1832-1836, concerning milling and agricultural operations at Airfield and Little Egypt plantations. Also includes diary, 1843-1844, kept in Italy, correspondence, and miscellaneous materials of Richard Barnes Gooch, primarily as a student in Hanover County and at Georgetown College and the University of Virginia. Materials of Doctor Philip Claiborne Gooch of Richmond, Va., include a commonplace book and diary, 1839-1846, kept primarily as a student at the University of Virginia; correspondence; a minute book of Richmond Board of Health kept during the 1849 cholera epidemic; and letters concerning Gooch's application for a post on the faculty of the Medical Department of the University of Missouri. The collection also includes materials concerning the service of Arthur Fleming Gooch in the 45th Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A.; as well as miscellaneous materials of other Gooch family members.

In 1816, the Bank of the United States was rechartered, the first charter having expired in 1811, in an attempt to stabilize the national currency. Within the first three years, the bank was nearly ruined due to mismanagement. Langdon Cheves was elected president of its board of directors in 1819 and restored the bank's credit.
